DO IT ON THE STRINGS:
Live In California November 2010
While drummer John Hofer took some time off in November 2010 to spend
time with his newborn daughter, the remaining Mother Hips booked
a handful of acoustic shows in northern and southern California.
Tim, Greg, and Paul performed songs from almost every Mother Hips
record, songs from their respective side-projects, a cover song or
two, and two new songs giving us a glimpse of the next Hips record.
With lyrics and harmonies shining through, these songs take on new
meaning than when performed with the loud rock tones of an electric
Mother Hips show. But what also made these performances so enjoyable
was seeing Paul Hoaglin alternate between bass, mandolin, and pedal
steel guitar while also contributing to the three-part vocal harmonies.
This set was mostly recorded live in Grass Valley, California on
November 13th, 2010 except for three tracks which were recorded the
night before in Santa Monica, CA.

April 20, 2008 - Denver, CO
I have been spending a lot of time in airports lately, hanging around, waiting
to get on planes, trying to get to
the show. I like to to watch people and listen to what they say.
But the thing that always hits me the hardest these days is the sheer volume
of people that are continuously traveling around this country. So many of us,
in fact, that the system is pretty much broken, and it's getting worse all the
time. Everywhere we look there is overwhelming evidence of the peril our planet
is in, and it's almost all caused by people. There are just so many of us here
now that we all have to be very careful about our choices. That's the reality.
Often I wish I could just be a farmer or something, grow vegetables in the backyard,
shop at the local food co-op, buy only second-hand clothes and furniture and
stuff, and stop contributing to our problems. But I am not a farmer, I am a musician,
and I have to travel to earn a living. I am afraid of being a hypocrite, of believing
one thing and living another. What I can do is use the songs to convey a message,
a feeling of concern and love for our environment. I feel like I have to do that,
but I am kind of a subtle guy. I don't like to hit anybody over the head with
ideas.
Those thoughts and intentions are in there, and hopefully they are helping. There's a lot going on right now. I am out on tour with Jackie Greene, in support
of my new record HOUSE OF BLUHM. I will
be meeting up with the Hips in Philadelphia and New York for some co- bill shows
with New Monsoon. The Hips are playing some festivals coming up and also trying
something new. Matt Butler of the Everyone Orchestra will be conducting the Hips
at the Moe's Alley shows in June. Matt does this amazing thing where he conducts
musicians from the edge of the stage, holding up a dry-erase board with specific
instructions to various members of the group, who have to execute
these instructions on the fly. It is scary and fun and very unique.
The idea is that Matt and we will weave Hips songs in between these improvisational
segue ways. I am really looking forward to it. I'm pretty sure Steve Poltz is
going to be there with his amazing rock band as well.
I have been busy producing too. Nicki Bluhm's record TOBY'S
SONG is coming out
May 7th (Cafe DuNord). The record I have been working on with Joey Barro (The
Antiques) is done and will be coming out on Banter Records very soon. He doesn't
know what it's going to be called yet. Also, Dave Brogan's (Animal Liberation
Orchestra) record is almost done and hopefully will be out soon as well. The
newest Mother Hips single "Childish Dreams" has been released, backed
with The Bees' "Papa Echo." The vinyl sounds very very
good. The split single idea is working out really well and I think
there will be another one of a different nature coming out before
long.

WELCOME
Hello and welcome to the website. If you move the cursor over the
different panels you will see how it works. I have a new record
out on San Francisco's Fog
City Records called CALIFORNIA
WAY. The songs on the record are mostly new recordings of old
songs that never got recorded, with a few new songs thrown in. It
is a really quiet album. You can hear some of it if you go to the
Music and Video
section of my site. It is an "enhanced" CD which means
there are some videos that you can watch on your computer. In support
of this release I am playing some shows up and down California,
probably by myself but possibly with a friend or two. There is a
freedom to playing alone that is fantastic but it can get lonely
too. It looks like the Involvement will be playing some shows this
winter and the Mother Hips will be playing some shows in the spring.
Feel free to write to info@timbluhm.com
and don't forget to put your email address on the email
list if it isn't there already. Thanks to Fast
Atmosphere for helping me create this site. We hope you like
it.
